From Puberty to Menopause....and all the bits in between

Ideally the natural cycles in a woman's life should be a seamless transition. However many factors can affect these transitions including lifestyle, stress, diet, pollution and genetics. For some the upheaval can not only interfere with our physical health but also affect our emotions quite significantly.

Women report feeling isolated or not understood whilst going through these processes. They are often told that their symptoms are natural and they should 'learn to deal with them,' or 'it is all in your head.'

However as a Chinese Medicine practitioner Sheira has learned that these symptoms often indicate an underlying imbalance and if treated early can often prevent or minimise the impact of more severe conditions. Acupuncture can help regulate and balance your hormones and emotions enabling you to cope better.

Adolescence

Puberty is a time of great change and for many young women the start of their periods can be painful creating great angst. The emotional upheaval that can occur can also have a serious impact on their academic careers and personal lives.

Some girls routinely miss days at school or university during their periods.

Teenagers and women who have painful, irregular periods report their symptoms seem to change dramatically following regular treatments. They note a significant lessening or complete lack of pain and cramps, breast tenderness and PMT symptoms with regular Acupuncture treatments.

Other conditions that show improvement following regular Acupuncture treatments include endometriosis, dysmenorrhea, PCOS, anxiety and acne.

Womanhood

In addition to all the above symptoms associated with their monthly cycles, some women stop their hormonal contraceptive medicine as long term use can have impact on health. Usually they would have started hormonal birth control in an effort to manage the signs and symptoms of their monthly cycles. However on stopping they can find their symptoms are worse Acupuncture can help with many of their changes. Regulating your cycle and enabling less reliance on hormonal control.

Menopause

Menopause can be a period of significant emotional change for many women. This combined with physical symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats, insomnia, thinning of hair, headaches, palpitations and loss of libido can create much upheaval. There can also be emotional symptoms like anxiety, depression,

sadness for the loss of fertility, irritability

and mood swings.

For some women Hormone Replacement

Therapy (HRT) can be useful during this time but it may not be suitable for everyone or some women want a more holistic approach to managing their symptoms.

Acupuncture has been demonstrated to be effective in treating hot flushes and symptoms of anxiety and depression associated with the menopause.
